Course Description & Objectives
In this risk management and record-keeping course designed for Board Order compliance as well as continuing education hours for licensure registration, dental practitioners and office team member attendees will:

  • Learn to manage & reduce your risks by understanding the laws & rules on Record Keeping, Informed Consent, & the Standard of Care.
  • View actual investigations and cases of alleged violations of the Texas Dental Practice Act and the Rules and Regulations of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.
  • Analyze the diagnosis and treatment planning of clinical cases, and review which risk management protocols and procedures should have been implemented, and the applicable Texas law.
  • Cover the TSBDE Rules & Regulations, and the recommended “risk management” systems and approaches for compliance with state regulations, including record-keeping and ethics.
  • 3-Hour and 9-Hour Courses are also available here.

ABOUT BOYD W. SHEPHERD, D.D.S., J.D.


Since 1994, I have developed a specialized practice of providing legal services and counsel to Texas dentists on a wide range of legal issues.

My law practice includes day-to-day counsel and guidance to dentists across the state of Texas on issues related to their business operations, practice transitions (seller-side and buyer-side), risk management, regulatory board rule compliance, employees, patients, and a variety of matters in litigation.


My resume includes more details of my career as a licensed dentist and licensed attorney, but in short: I am a 1985 Graduate Texas A&M University, a 1988 Graduate UT Dental Branch Houston, and a 1992 Graduate South Texas College of Law. I am a member of the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, and the Greater Houston Dental Society.

I am also approved by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners as a continuing education provider for courses related to risk management, record-keeping, and ethics pursuant to 22 TAC §104.1 and §104.2.
